The renovation of Ho Chi Minh City’s iconic Notre Dame Basilica, which began in mid-2017, will be extended until 2027 due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The information was given by Lam Ngo Hoang Anh, office manager of the HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The HCM City’s Notre Dame Cathedral is undergoing the restoration

Anh said that the VND140-billion (USD6 million) restoration project that started in 2017 was scheduled to be finished in 2023. However, the prolonged Covid-19 pandemic had slowed the import of construction materials from France and Germany. So the project which is invested by the Ho Chi Minh City Archdiocese would need to continue for another four years.

Construction on the church began in 1877 and it opened to the public in 1880, the church had not seen any major restoration before mid-2017. Unlike other churches in HCM City, Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon is unfenced.

Since the restoration, the church has suspended the welcoming of visitors but still operates.

Located in the city centre, the church is a famous tourist site.
