The plan to open HCM City’s second pedestrian street on Bui Vien on July 15 has been delayed.

District 1 People’s Committee Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Thu Huong said the installation of underground telecommunications cable and water supply networks, and paving have not been completed, so it is impossible to open Bui Vien pedestrian street as scheduled.

Huong, however, added that despite the delay, vehicles will still be banned on the street at Pham Ngu Lao Ward from 7 pm to 2 am every Saturday and Sunday to create a more welcoming environment for residents and tourists.

The authorities are spending VND10.7 billion (USD454,500) on pedestrianising Bui Vien.

Street art performances are expected to be held on the street on 8-10 pm every Saturday and Sunday. The street will also offer free Wi-Fi and toilets.

Pham Ngu Lao Ward receives hundreds of tourists every day, rising to 1,200 people at peak time with the majority being foreigners.

The city’s Nguyen Hue Street was pedestrianised last year.
