Thousands cram Cat Ba beaches on hot summer days

Cat Ba Island has seen huge crowds on its beaches during hot summer days after the Tan Vu-Lach Huyen Bridge was completed.

Squeezing to the beach

Cat Ba is becoming a popular attraction in recent years. Many beaches were swamped with tourists during holidays and this year is no exception. Hung, a hotel owner, said the number of tourists this year was especially high.

Since early May, most hotels and guest houses have been fully booked during the weekends. Severe congestion also often occurs at and around Got ferry terminal.

After the Tan Vu-Lach Huyen Bridge was put into use, the travel time from Hanoi to Haiphong has significantly decreased. This is considered the main cause for the influx of visitors to Cat Ba.

From June 8 to 10, thousands of tourists came to Cat Ba for a swim in the sea. 45-year-old Tai from Hanoi said since the Cat Co 2 Beach was under construction, more people had to go to Cat Co 1 and 3 beaches. It is extremely crowded in the early morning and evening.

"It's difficult to move along the narrow path with such many people," he said. "Some people had to queue for hours even to access the beach."

The beaches in Cat Ba often close before 6 pm to avoid tides so getting stuck amid the sea of people while being on the way to the beach is unavoidable during prime times.

The room rates have doubled and several restaurants have inflated their prices. Visitors are advised to go to Cat Ba during weekdays and research about their hotels and restaurants beforehand.
