A very special market in the northern province of Nam Dinh allows people to sell bad luck and to buy good luck for the year ahead.

Vieng Market is held only on the midnight of the 7th day of the lunar year which fell on February 11 and lasted only through the morning of the 8th day. Legend says that the midnight is the time for Goddess Lieu Hanh’s soul to appear so she could hear people’s wishes.

This year, the organisers arranged 500 stewards to ensure order in the market.

Goods sold at the market vary from agricultural tools to fruits and ornamental plants.

Pham Thai Hung from Phu Ly Town, Ha Nam Province, said that every year he often comes to the market to buy something for wishing luck such as plants or agricultural tools.

Most of the sellers are from locals. They sell their goods not only for money but also for looking for luck. People prefer buying cheap products rather than expensive ones.

Do Van Ky, vice chairman of Vu Ban District People’s Committee, said that around 30,000 people were estimated to visit the market this year.
