A group of 15 tourists from France landed at Noi Bai Airport on January 1. Alain Baron was the first tourist to arrive by air in Hanoi. Baron and his wife have booked a two-week holiday in Vietnam and Hanoi is their first destination.

Baron said he was surprised and honoured to be the first tourist to Hanoi in the new year.

Tran Duc Hai, director of Hanoi Tourism Department, said this was a promising start for the local tourism and a chance to promote the city. The authorities also wanted to send a message that Hanoi was a safe, friendly, attractive city for tourists.

Statistics from the department showed that in 2019, Hanoi received nearly 29 million tourists including over 17 million international tourists, an increase of 17% compared to the previous year. The number of domestic tourists also increased by 8%. Revenue generated from tourism services reached a record VND103trn, increased by 34% on the previous year.

According to Hai, their promotion programmes last year had brought great results, especially advertising content on CNN.

Various events are planned for 2020 such as the 1010th anniversary of Hanoi and the first Formula 1 motor race. Those were opportunities but also challenges for the tourism industry to develop.

At the meeting on the implementation of Resolution 6 about developing Hanoi tourism in 2016-2020 period and the future, deputy party secretary Ngo Thi Thanh Hang said the Department of Tourism had drafted suitable plans to carry out the resolution and had met or exceeded four tourism development goals.

"In order to attract more tourists, the department should link Hanoi tourism events with other major events in Vietnam and Hanoi in 2020. Tourism development should be associated with the public benefit in order to encourage more people to actively contribute to the country," she said.
