As part of a wider programme to develop tourism, Ba Ha, in Lao Cai Province hosted horse races on May 28 and 29.
An impressive showing
Upwards of 70 horses competed. These are work horses taken from surrounding districts and provinces. For a short time they became race horses, and a few of them champions. Vang Van Huynh, from Na Hoi, Lao Cai, riding horse No. 29 won first prize, VND20 million (USD970).
This year’s competition attracted tens of thousands of spectators.
Nguyen Nam Hung, from Hanoi, commented, “This is the first year I’ve come to see the horse races. Actually, what attracts me most is the track itself. It’s great.”
The event is also a chance for Bac Ha to show off the specialities of the region, such as Ban Pho maize alcohol, Bac Ha tea, forest honey, along with traditional brocades.
