The Ceramic Road along the Red River in Hanoi yesterday received a certificate from the Guinness Book of World Records at its inauguration.

As one of the cultural projects to celebrate the capital city’s 1,000 year anniversary, the Ceramic Road was started in 2008 and after two years has been completed and recognised as the world’s largest ceramic mosaic by the Guinness Book of World Records.

The 4-kilometre Ceramic Road along the Red River consists of many mosaics which cover a total area of nearly 7,000 square metres. These murals feature images of Vietnam’s landscapes, history, and traditional craft villages such as Bat Trang, Chua Dau, Vinh Long, and Bau Truc.

Attending the inauguration ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, Ngo Thi Thanh Hang, confirmed the cultural and historical values of the work and hoped to have more similar works to lighten up the capital city.

At the ceremony, a representative from the Guinness World Records, Beatriz Fernandez, presented the certificate to Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, a journalist and painter who developed the idea and made great contributions during the construction of the mosaic.

“This is a very impressive public work of art because it has attracted many artists from different countries to join,” said Beatriz Fernandez.

Fernandez also confirmed that after two days measuring and surveying the mosaic, they have officially declared this as a new Guinness World Record. “Just one section alone from An Duong Terminal to Tan Ap Terminal on Yen Phu Street covers 1,570,2m2, the mosaic of Hanoi has set a new Guinness World Record because the last record held was by a Chinese covering 1,494.4 m2,” she said.

Meanwhile, artist Thu Thuy was full of happiness with congratulations from local as well as foreign friends. “I am very happy that our work has been recognised and that it is making our Hanoi more beautiful on its great anniversary,” she expressed.
