Hanoi to re-open railway arches

Railway arches in Hanoi running up to Long Bien Bridge that were sealed with concrete for more than a decade will be re-opened.

According to the municipal people’s committee chairman Nguyen Duc Chung, the move is part of a project to expand cultural spaces for use to Hanoi’s residents.

Chung said that 131 spans of arches in Hanoi built during the French colonial period had been sealed by the city because of crime concerns.

Re-opening the spans will not only create more cultural space for residents and boost the city’s tourism but also facilitate traffic in the city centre, particularly on the narrow Gam Cau Street, Chung added.

Chung noted that after being re-openned, the arches will be upgraded to serve book streets, book café shops as well as art and cultural activities.

Only four among 131 spans have been re-opened to pedestrians.

The spaces around the spans have been taken up by residents of Phung Hung Street to open clothing and food kiosks or parking lots

After more than a decade, many arches on the road section leading to Long Bien Bridge have seriously deteriorated.
