Many manhole covers on some Hanoi’s streets have been turned into colourful paintings as part of a project to help raise awareness about environmental protection and urban beauty.

The Hanoi’s Colours Project has been carried out by Hanoi Art Space Club since 2018.

Manhole covers on Dinh Tien Hoang and Trang Tien streets in Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem District have been painted with images of animals.

Dinh Tien Hoang and Trang Tien are two main streets in Hanoi which often attract many visitors. Following local authority approval, the club decorated the manhole covers.

The artists co-operated with Bat Trang pottery village in Hanoi’s Gia Lam District to have materials to turn the manhole covers into mosaic paintings

Nguyen Thi Nguyen, a local resident in Hoan Kiem District, said that she was totally surprised to see manhole covers to be replaced with vivid pictures. "I am worried that the works can be damaged by people who drive motorbikes on the pavement. I hope that people will protect the capital city’s beauty”, Nguyen added.

The project is intended to raise public awareness about the environment.
