The Ministry of Education and Training has said it would continue inspections of universities and colleges nationwide to ensure they are operating with adequate facilities and number of lecturers.

Deputy Minister of Education and Training Bui Van Ga said that the ministry would seriously punish violators and even stop their operations if they did not take corrective action.

In a recent inspection of 24 universities and colleges, the ministry stopped three universities and colleges and 12 faculties in other institutions from recruiting new students for the 2012-13 school year because they failed to comply with the ministry's stipulations on facilities and number of lecturers.

The Van Hien University and the Information Technology College, both in HCM City and the Dong Do University in Ha Noi have been directed to stop recruiting students from the coming academic year.

Regulations require one teacher for every 25 students at the tertiary level, but several colleges and universities had one teacher for more students.

A recruitment ban has also been imposed on four faculties in the Luong The Vinh University in northern Nam Dinh Province: Food Science and Technology, Plant Protection, Library Sciences and Electrical/Electronic Technology.

Another four faculties in the Luong The Vinh University and the Chu Van An University in northern Hung Yen Province: Construction Technology, English, Chinese and Vietnamese Studies; the Construction Technology and Economics faculties of the Nguyen Trai University in Ha Noi; and the faculties of Accountancy and Business Administration at the University of Architecture in Da Nang have also been subjected to the recruitment ban.

The three universities of Van Hien, Information Technology and Dong Do have not yet been able to acquire land to build their own facilities.

The ministry has asked these universities to correct their violations by 2013, failing which it would ask the Prime Minister to dissolve these ventures, officials said.
