Vietnamese in Top 5 for student numbers in New Zealand

More than 2,200 Vietnamese are currently studying in New Zealand, putting it among the Top three Southeast Asian countries in terms of student numbers, Education New Zealand (ENZ) revealed at a recent conference in Ho Chi Minh City on studying abroad.

The number of Vietnamese students pursuing bachelor degree at universities in New Zealand puts it among the Top 5 of all countries. The number increased 88 per cent in the first eight months of this year.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese taking on Masters or doctorate studies accounts for about one-third of all international students.

ENZ also revealed a 97 per cent year-on-year increase in the number of first-time student visas during the first five months of 2017.

According to ENZ, the Top 5 fields of study most popular among Vietnamese students are management and commerce (about 40 per cent), social and cultural studies (about 30 per cent), information technology (about 13 per cent), food, services, and hospitality (8 per cent), and natural sciences (7 per cent).

Vietnam has more than 130,000 students studying abroad, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET). Of these, 38,000, or 29.2 per cent, study in Japan.

Meanwhile, 31,000 students are in Australia, which accounts for 23.8 per cent of all Vietnamese students overseas. Vietnam was fourth in the number of students studying in Australia this year, according to a report from Australia’s Department of Education and Training.

The US is also a favored destination for Vietnamese students, with 28,000, or 21.5 per cent of the total, now studying in the country. Vietnam topped Southeast Asia in the number of students in the US in 2015, with 19,000, according to the US Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City.

Other destinations include China, where 13,000 students, or 10 per cent, are studying, and the UK, with 11,000 students, or 8.4 per cent.
