Conference discusses poor regional rankings for Vietnamese universities
Vietnam currently has five universities named in the top 400 in Asia ranked by the World University Ranking.
The Ministry of Education and Training and Vietnam National University, Hanoi, on April 11 held a conference on solutions to raise international standards and prestige of Vietnam’s universities.
The five universities in Vietnam listed in the top 400 universities in Asia were Vietnam National University, Hanoi; Vietnam National University, HCM City; Can Tho University; Hue University; Hanoi University of Technology.
According to Nguyen Huu Duc, deputy director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Vietnam needs to set a goal to have 20 universities listed in the top 400 in Asia by 2020 and two ranked among 500 best universities worldwide by 2025.
A survey conducted by Vietnam National University, Hanoi, indicated that many universities in Vietnam, including Hanoi Medical University, Hanoi National University of Education and Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology have potentials to be named among top 200 or 400 in Asia.
Duc suggested that Vietnamese universities should invest more in improving education quality and pay more attention to international co-operation activities. They also need to focus on marketing activities as well as brand identity.
It is very important for universities to boost research activities. The Ministry of Education and Training needs to work with the Ministry of Science and Technology to develop the National Foundation for Science and Technology for supporting universities’ scientific research.
Duc also mentioned the necessity for Vietnam to build a set of criteria for local universities’ ranking based on the criteria used.
Minister of Education and Training Phung Xuan Nha said that international criteria need to be considered for setting up a set of criteria for ranking Vietnamese universities.
The ranking will help universities know where they are to deal with weaknesses.
