A Vietnam-Cuba friendship school was inaugurated in the eastern Cuban province of Santiago de Cuba on April 23, in the presence of Raul Castro Ruz, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee, alongside Miguel Diaz-Canel, President of the Council of State and Council of Ministers of Cuba, and many Cuban government officials.

It is Cuba’s second school dedicated to children with disabilities after the first school opened in Havana, having the enrollment scope of covering five provinces in the eastern region. The first school began operations earlier this year in a series of activities celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Beatriz Johnson, Vice President of the Council of State of Cuba and President of the Provincial Assembly of People’s Power in Santiago de Cuba, emphasised that the construction of an additional school especially dedicated to children with physical defects was also the lifetime aspiration of late Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

The Vietnam-Cuba friendship school is located in Villa Elvira, an ancient building recognised as a national architectural relic site of Cuba in Santiago city, the capital city of Santiago de Cuba province. So far, 120 students have registered to study at this special school, including 78 full boarders. Like general education, special education for children with disabilities in Cuba is also free of charge, including medical care, specific nutrition and boarding facilities.

The school in Santiago builds on the tradition which began in the 1960s that many works in Cuba, including buildings, residential areas, factories, stadiums and schools, have been named after places or celebrities of Vietnam. Even, Vietnam’s capital city Hanoi is also a popular name among Cuban people born in the 1970s, which is a vivid reflection of the special sentiments between the two nations.
