Lao Cai student offered scholarships at American universities

A high school student from the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai has been offered scholarships from four American universities.

Nguyen Ngoc Lien from Grade 12 of Lao Cai High School for the Gifted has received the VND3.5 billion (USD152,173) scholarship from Whitworth University; VND2.4 billion from Elmira College; VND2.2 billion from Whittier College and VND1.5 billion from Fulbright University Vietnam.

Lien has decided to study at Fulbright University Vietnam located in HCM City to help ease the financial pressure for her family. She will start there from September.

Lien has a passion for learning English and she has won many English prizes and has excellent study results in all school years.

The woman mostly studied online, instead of going to extra classes.

She also actively participates in charitable activities. She and many students from Lao Cai High School for the Gifted conducted a programme to support poor children in Bac Ha District by calling for a total donation of VND100 million from the community.

The activity provided clothes and blankets to the children. Through the programme, water purifiers were also granted to a high school in Muong Khuong District.
