PM urges to nurture morality and skills for students

One of the important tasks for the education sector in the upcoming 2019-2020 school year is to create fundamental changes in the education of ethics and life skills for students, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has stated.

The PM was speaking at a teleconference held by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) on August 6 to review the 2018-2019 school year and deploy tasks for the next one.


Praising the efforts of the entire education sector in achieving positive results in the past school year, the cabinet leader stated the good news that the national high school graduation exam was a success with discipline and quality, winning the trust from the whole of society.

He also pointed out that the sector has built a good legal framework, while striving to achieve the rate of universal education for 5-year-old children at 99.98%, which is highly admired by the international community.

Stressing the important role of education in the development of every citizen and every family, PM Phuc required the educational sector and the relevant authorities and localities to pay due attention and investment to this field.

Among the requirements set for the new academic year, he emphasised on moral education and providing life skills for students, saying it is the responsibility of the whole society and the school should play a central role.

The MOET was asked to review the ethics education programmes in pedagogical schools and education and training institutions, ensuring their practical, feasible and effective values in integrating into other subjects. Moral lifestyle education should not only be in school but also be held through creative activities for students to get access to cultural traditions, he added.

In addition, teachers should promote their roles are the most valuable moral examples for students to follow. Mass organisations have the responsibility to work with schools and families to educate morals and lifestyles for students, PM Phuc suggested.

According to MOET Minister Phung Xuan Nha, in the last academic year, the sector achieved positive results, particularly, the quality of higher education has been increasingly improved. There are six tertiary education institutions and 128 training programmes recognised by international education accreditation organisations. For the first time, Vietnam has two universities in the list of the world's top 1,000 universities, namely Vietnam National University - Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City branches, while seven other are included in the list of top universities in Asia. Some facilities have effectively implemented human resource training programmes transferred from developed countries, while startups among students has been strongly promoted.

The country currently has nearly 550 joint training programmes with foreign partners by 85 domestic higher education institutions and 258 foreign ones in 34 countries and territories. In the last school year, localities constructed an addition of 14,308 classrooms, 38,165 clean water projects and 60,000 school toilets.

Minister Nha said that in the next school year, his ministry will focus on implementing five key tasks, including planning the preschool network and arranging higher education institutions, solving the lack of teachers and improving their capacity for new education programmes, renovating the management of schools and universities’ autonomy, improving the quality of human resources, and promoting moral education and life skills for students.
