Education officials jailed in exam cheating scandal in Son La

12 former education officials in the northern province of Son La were today given punishment for involving in the 2017-2018 national high school exam cheating scandal.




Former head of the division for examination and educational quality management at the Son La Provincial Department of Education and Training, Lo Van Huynh is sentenced 21 years in jail

The People’s Court of Son La Province on May 29 announced the sentences of between two and 21 years to the 12 defendants of whom Lo Van Huynh, former head of the division for examination and educational quality management at the provincial Department of Education and Training getting the highest punishment.

According to the indictment from the Son La Provincial People’s Procuracy, the defendants "abused their power while performing their official duties” to inflate the exam scores of 44 students so they could graduate high school and enrol at good universities or colleges.


Three of the defendants were found guilty of “receiving bribes” and “abusing their position and power while performing duties', including Nguyen Thi Hong Nga, former specialist at the division for examination and educational quality management who was given 19 years and six months in jail.

The rest were given the punishment for “abusing their position and power while performing duties” and “offering bribes".

The court said the defendants’ actions were dangerous for society, offended teachers’ honour, caused inequality among examination takers, and stirred public concern, and so must be strictly handled to ensure future deterrence.

On May 21, the People’s Court of Hoa Binh Province also sentenced 15 defendants involved in the 2017-2018 national high school exam cheating scandal in which dozens of candidates had their exam scores raised so they could graduate high school and enrol in universities or colleges.
