Vietnam National University, Hanoi will include golf in its physical education programme along with football, swimming, table tennis and other sports.

Learning golf at university

Nguyen Viet Hoa, director of the Centre for Physical Education and Sports of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, said they have collaborated with a golf academy for investment into equipment, new facilities and training for teachers.

Golf will be a trial subject in the 2021-2022 academic year. If the results are positive, it will become an official subject.

"Learning golf in the university will help the students become more confident," Hoa said. "It's less competitive than other sports and will make learners want to improve themselves. It may be a bridge to help students expand connections and relationships in the future."

Being the first public university to include golf in the teaching programme, Hoa said they had had some difficulties, especially the lack of equipment and facilities since golf is not a popular sport in Vietnam.

"It will also take time to train teachers. But I believe that most PE teachers will take up golf quickly," he said.

When golf becomes an official subject, the Centre for Physical Education and Sports will provide all equipment for the students. The fees for golf will be the same as the fees for other subjects.
