Several provinces postpone school reopening

Ha Tinh Department of Education and Training said they would only hold online classes for secondary and high school students. Primary students would stay home until further notice.

Lam Dong Department of Education and Training said they would not hold online classes for first graders and advised parents to let their children watch TV education programmes co-produced by the Ministry of Education and Training for the time being. Hai Phong City closed online classes for first graders after a while, saying that the method had not proved effective.

Can Tho City also issued a notice saying that online classes were not beneficial for first graders. According to the Department of Education and Training, first graders do not have the skills to study online and they cannot fully understand or use computers or tablets. First graders have not met teachers or classmates face to face so communication will be very difficult. If the outbreak remains complicated after September 15, they will adjust the school reopening time.

Many teachers and parents said many first graders still did not know how to use pens and they cannot concentrate when studying online.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Ha, a first-grade teacher in Tay Ho District, Hanoi, said they had scheduled the classes so that parents could assist their children. However, there are still many problems.

"The internet connection was bad. Some children use mobile phones to access the class. When a call came, they were ejected from the class and couldn't get back in. Some children don't have their own room and the background noise has been really loud," she said. "My class has over 50 students so my screen was unable to show all of them. I didn't know if everyone was concentrating on the lesson."

Another teacher in Hanoi also said many children held their pencils incorrectly but she had no way to guide them personally.
