The move came after the department sought the municipal authorities’ permission to reopen schools after the holiday.

Nguyen Hung in Hoang Mai District said it's high time schools reopened to fully-vaccinated children.

"My daughter is in eighth grade and she has been fully vaccinated against Covid-19," he said. "Since the social distancing rules were removed, she has gone out shopping, eating and meeting friends everyday. So I think schools should also be reopened to fully-vaccinated students."

Speaking to Dantri/Dtinews, headmaster of Lomonosov Middle & High School, Nguyen Quang Tung, said that they have just carried out a survey on 2,235 parents whose children are studying in grade 7 to 12 and 70.6% agree to let their children to return to school for on-site study.

Headmaster of Marie Curie Hanoi School, Nguyen Xuan Khang, also said that he has received lots of support from parents when sharing about the plan to reopen schools.

"We also hope that we can resume on-site classes soon, so they get better teaching," he said..

According to director of the Department of Education and Training, Tran The Cuong, they are considering letting students from grades 7 to 12 be back to school in all 30 districts after the 2022 Lunar New Year holiday; then the city will consider allowing the lower grades, including preschool and primary schools.

"The final decision would be taken in accordance with the coronavirus situation and student vaccination rate," Cuong noted.

Previously, in late 2021, Hanoi piloted direct teaching with students in grades 9 and 12 in some areas. There are now around 64,000 students out of 2.2 million in the capital studying in school, while the rest remain home.

Local schools have been closed since May 2021 following the fourth coronavirus wave hit.

The city is currently the biggest epicentre in the country with around three million Covid-19 infections confirmed daily.
