Son Hong Commune in Huong Son District has suffered the largest and worst deforestation ever taken place in Ha Tinh Province.

Most of the 17,000 hectares of forest land located along the Vietnam-Laos border, presently under management of the Huong Son Forestry and Service Company and Son Hong Commune authorities, has been badly denuded and large scale illegal felling of trees has devastated the area.

The Government Office on March 19 sent a dispatch instructing the Ministries of Public Security, Agriculture and Rural Development and the People’s Committee in Ha Tinh Province to look into the circumstances of how such a large area was denuded without the knowledge of concerned authorities.

Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai has ordered the above ministries to investigate the case and strictly deal with individuals and organisations responsible for this massive destruction.

Authorities have so far seized about 500 cubic metres of valuable timber from the area. Illegal logging has been continuing since 2011 but was uncovered only at the beginning of this year.
