PM Nguyen Tan Dung has approved a new urban development plan for Hanoi, which includes upgrades to parks and green spaces.

Parking lots are planned to built inside Thong Nhat Park

To deal with the parking problem, Hanoi authorities had planned to use land in Thong Nhat Park to build parking lots.

However, in Resolution 1259 issued in July, 2011, on Hanoi urban planning to 2030 with a view to 2050, the Prime Minister decided to allocate more land to build parks and upgrade existing ones, including Thong Nhat Park.

The resolution said that this is necessary to build Hanoi into a green, attractive and modern city. The other aims of the resolution were to improve the urban environment while adding more land for parks and moving factories and agency headquarters out of the city centre.

The Prime Minister stated, "Parks will be given a priority in the city, especially those that have cultural significance, such as Co Loa,  Ho Tay and the botanical garden. Thong Nhat, Yen So and Me Tri parks are also on the list. Eco-parks with space for sport activities and parks that connect with other green areas in Soc Son, Ba Vi distrct and the river system should also be preserved."

Concerning the issue of building six parking lots in Thong Nhat Park by Hanoi authorities, Dao Ngoc Nghiem, Deputy Chairman of the Hanoi Planning and Architecture said, "Hanoi hasn't upgraded its maintained its green spaces as much as it should have, and now Hanoi People's Committee plans to take the limited green areas away. The authorities should be cautious."

According to Nghiem, the green spaces in four inner-city districts are very few, "There are only 1.09 square metres per capita while we are trying to reach 4-4.5 square metres per capita."
