Hospitals in HCMC discharge around 26,178 cubic meters of medical waste per day and almost 24,782 cubic meters is treated before being discharged into the environment. This was reported by Biet at a meeting on October 23 with a supervisory team from the People’s Committee of HCMC, which was sent to check the waste treatment systems in medical clinics.

Among the 21 state-run central hospitals in the City, 14 of them have standard waste treatment systems; five have improved treatment systems and two have not yet invested in any system. Of 29 state-run hospitals under the Department of Health, 19 have standard waste treatment plants, eight are in the process of installing and two are considering installing.

Ten out of 23 medical clinics in districts have standard waste treatment systems and 30 out of 34 private hospitals in the city have quality treatment systems.

Dr. Tran Thanh My, director of the Orthopedic Hospital in HCMC, said his hospital has constructed a waste treatment plant which will become operational by December 2012.

The supervisory team from the People’s Committee made a tour of hospitals in District 4 and the Children Hospital No.2, and was impressed with the standard waste treatment systems there.
