Finland helps develop forest information management

An official development assistance (ODA) loan for the second phase of the Forestry Management Information System (FORMIS II) development project was signed in Hanoi on May 24.
The EUR10 million project, begun in April 2013 and running until 2018, received EUR9.7 million in ODA from the Finnish government. The remainder was sourced from corresponding capital.

Finish Ambassador Kimmo Lahdevirta expressed hopes that the FORMIS II will contribute to supporting the Vietnamese forestry sector’s sustainable development, minimising climate change’s negative impact and providing poor people in remote areas with the most up-to-date forestry information available.

Deputy Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Ha Cong Tuan said the first phase of the FORMIS (implemented from 2009–2012) was of great importance to the Vietnamese forestry sector.

It formed the bedrock for the Finnish Government’s continuing sponsorship commitment to FORMIS II, and thus to expanding and completing forestry software databases nationwide.

The five components of FORMIS II include creating processes, standards, and mechanisms for inter-agency information exchanges; installing a FORMIS background support system; and linking all forested cities and provinces with uniform management applications.
