New flood-prevention measures on the table for HCM City

The deputy chairman of Ho Chi Minh City's People Committee, Nguyen Huu Tin, recently called for seminars to be held in order to discuss measures to cope with flooding in the area.

In recent seasons, rainfall has exceeded the capacity of sewage systems. This, coupled with large amounts of solid waste, has caused flooding problems the city appears unable to handle.

In a meeting with the Department of Transport and the  Steering Centre for the Urban Flood Control Program on October 21, Tin proposed that they organise seminars on the issue in order to gather ideas from experts.

According to the city's People's Committee and the Department of Transport, they have been focusing their efforts on the districts most hard-hit since last year. Still, there have been 27 recorded flooding areas, causing public concern over the ability of authorities to control the situation.

The Steering Centre for the Urban Flood Control Program has opened water ways for faster drainage, along with 30 new water-pumping stations. Still, officials from the centre have insisted that long-term funding will be needed to deal with the problem in the future.

Even though city authorities have been focusing on 14 newly-identified flood-prone areas, many have pointed out that infrastructure works, such as drainage and sewage pipes, will be needed to fix the situation.
