Neglected lake in Can Tho loses its luster

Xang Thoi Lake in An Cu Ward, Nink Kieu District, one of the most beautiful places in Can Tho City, is losing its charm due to lack of care.

In recent months, many stone benches on the side of this lake have collapsed while rubbish floats along freely on the lake’s surface.

No actions have been announced by authorities to improve the situation at this time.

A project aiming to renovate and upgrade Xang Thoi Lake was invested in with a capital of VND 100 billion (USD 5.2 million) and began work in October, 2006. The project was inaugurated on the same day Can Tho City was recognised as Vietnam’s 5th centrally-governed city back in August, 2009.

At present, this million-dollar lake has completely lost the peaceful image it used to have.

Below are photos of Xang Thoi Lake:

Stone benches, some missing a leg, some collapsed, lie unattended to around the lake.

Thick clusters of trash float across the lake.
