Thousands of fish have died in a section of the Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe canal in HCM City, and are creating a stink for local residents in the summer heat.

Dead fish cover the water and clump around water hyacinth in the canal running through Tan Binh and Phu Nhuan Districts, rotting in the heat and causing a foul smell for local residents and tourists.

Most of the fish were medium tilapia and snapper.

Cleaning the canal

The municipal department of fisheries resource protection and quality management said the situation was a result of consecutive heavy rains that swept waste from surrounding areas into the canal, causing serious pollution.

On May 19, urban environmental workers arrived at the canal and began cleaning out the dead fish.
