A working group of the Ministry of Health and the World Bank (WB) had a discussion with authority of central Quang Ngai province on August 25 on the development of a solid hazardous medical waste treatment project in the locality.

Specialised bag is designed for medical waste.

Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Le Quang Thich asked the project’s management board to carefully evaluate the waste amount collected daily across the central province, especially by the Lilama EME, to identify the total capacity.

He proposed the WB support Quang Ngai in handling wastewater leak and pledged to promptly complete necessary procedures for the project to start as soon as possible.

The WB required the province to revise the project duration, according to Nguyen Thuy Anh, a WB official.

The hazardous medical waste treatment area is planned to be built between 2015 and 2017 at a total cost of over VND123 billion (about US$5.45 million), including a loan worth VND101 billion (US$4.48 million) from the WB and the remaining sourced from the local budget.

Located at Nghia Ky waste treatment site in Hanh Dung commune, Nghia Hanh district, the 8,000-hectare project targets to improve the management of solid medical waste from healthcare centres in the province using eco-friendly technology.

Quang Ngai is now home to nine provincial and 13 communal hospitals together with 184 medical stations and 350 private clinics, producing 680 kilos of hazardous medical waste in total per day.
