Danang’s authorities have chosen red-shanked douc langurs as the city's symbol in the run-up to hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in 2017.

The selection was based on the proposal of the municipal people's committee. Danang wants to build an environmentally-friendly city and call on the public to support environmental protection.

Since April 25 this year, advertising boards at bus stops at Danang City's Son Tra District have been replaced with those which have the image of red-shanked douc langur with the message to protect the endangered species. The campaign will be expanded to many other bus stops over the city soon.

Son Tra Nature Reserve in the city has around 500 red-shanked douc langurs which live in groups of between five and seven.

Red-shanked douc langurs were found in Son Tra District in 1969. Many researchers and film-makers have come to the locality to study the species.

Every day, thousands of visitors also visit Son Tra District to see red-shanked douc langurs in their habitat.
