Dozens of households threatened by erosion

Dozens of households are at risk of losing their houses to beach erosion in the coastal province of Binh Thuan.

On February 11 and 12, five houses in Tien Duc Village, Phan Thiet City, lost to erosion caused by north-east monsoon and high tides, while 30 other households are being threatened.

Le Thi Kim Anh, whose house was destroyed, said the erosion had started long ago and reached the peak on February 12. Five-metre high waves could be seen crashing onto the shore. "Our walls crumbled and our roof collapsed, then the water rushed in," she said.

Dang Van Cu, another villager said he was moving valuable items to safer places as his house is at risk of being lost.

After five houses lost to erosion, the authorities of Tien Thanh Commune have sent officials to monitor the tides and erosion problem in the area. Households living in dangerous areas are being encouraged to relocate to the Hat Dieu apartment buildings in Duc Long Ward while awaiting further direction from Phan Thiet City authorities.

Le Ngoc Thu, head of Tien Duc Village, said the land started to erode in 2010 and had worsened during the winter. About 150 households have suffered damages or completely lost their houses in the past years. 116 households have received land in another village but only 10 households have started building new houses.

As most villagers are fishermen with small incomes, building a new house is a huge problem for them so they'd rather not move. Thu hoped the authorities would give support so that the people can move out of the danger zone.
