Ha Tinh Province authorities have denied the rumour that Formosa Ha Tinh had discharged toxic waste water into the environment after a video clip showing red discharges posted on the internet.

A strip of reddish water

Several workers at Formosa Ha Tinh recently detected a 50-metre strip of reddish water at the Vung Ang Economic Zone. Local people said the water had become muddier but this is a normal phenomenon that occurs several times a year.

"It's a lucky sign because lots of fish will be caught," said a fisherman.

The reddish strip of water has been swept away by the waves. Samples have been taken for tests. According to Ky Anh Communal authorities, strips of reddish water had appeared before. The results show that the fish farms are being polluted by seaweed and household waste. In addition, the water in this area rarely moves.

On February 19, a video clip uploaded to Facebook showing a supposed toxic discharged sewer in Formosa had stirred up opinion on the internet.

A video clip showing red discharges into an unspecified large body of water

In the one-minute clip, the sewer can be seen discharging reddish waste water into an unspecified large body of water. The clip only shows the sewer, not the structure of the factory. According to the rumour, the clip was recorded at 10 am on February 17 at Wharf 1 at Hung Nghiep Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Corporation.

At 8 pm on the same day, Hoang Thanh Tung, vice head of the management board of economic zones in Ha Tinh Province denied the rumour. "We started looking into the issue immediately after receiving the news. It's a false rumour because Formosa Ha Tinh doesn't have any sewer hole like the one in the clip," he said.

Tung went on to say that anyone can upload anything onto the internet so viewers should be careful with what they read or watch to avoid fake news.

Duong Tat Thang, vice chairman of Ha Tinh Province and is responsible for the Vung Ang Economic Zone said the Department of Natural Resources and Environment had investigated and concluded that the clip wasn't recorded at Formosa Ha Tinh. The provincial authorities also showed interest in the original clip.

On February 20, an investigation team of Ha Tinh and the media will visit Formosa Ha Tinh to check the sewers. Ha Tinh provincial authorities said they would find the original location and who spread the footage.
