The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) has released a report on the status of the marine environment in four central provinces one year after the pollution incident caused by the Formosa steel mill in Ha Tinh province.

The monitoring focused on areas with local vortices that are less able to disperse water and potentially accumulate toxins in higher sediments.

The results of local monitoring at 19 beaches in the four provinces from September 2016 to date show that most of the parameters are within the limits of MoNRE’s QCVN 10-MT:2015 / BTNMT standards.

Phenol and iron levels were within the limits of the QCVN 10-MT:2015 / BTNMT standards and much lower than the 2016 monitoring results.

In the marine sediment environment, all samples from MONRE’s monitoring program in May showed that all parameters were within the allowable limits of its QCVN 43-2012 / BTNMT standards.

However, in some areas the total value of mineral grease exceeded QCVN 10-MT:2015 / BTNMT for aquaculture and aquaculture conservation. These locations are mainly located on the coast at Vung Ang in Ha Tinh province and at Nhat Le in Quang Binh province.

The results are the same as estimates of the quality of coastal water in Vietnam over recent years, and in some areas coastal seawater has been contaminated with mineral oil due to the coastal industry and the operation of seaports.

“Thus, one year after the incidents in the four central provinces, the results show that the coastal environment (including sea water and marine sediment) has stabilized and is safe for aquaculture, aquatic conservation, and water sports,” said a representative from MoNRE.

In April 2016, after the pollution incident in Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien Hue provinces, MoNRE cooperated with relevant ministries, experts, and scientists to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the extent, scope, and evolution of marine pollution and its causes.

By September 2016, with the control of emissions from the Formosa steel plant and the natural cleansing mechanisms of the environment, the content of pollutants had decreased. The quality of the marine environment in all monitored areas was within the limits of QCVN 10-MT: 2015 / BTNMT.

Since September 2016, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien Hue provinces have continued to implement periodical monitoring and monitoring of the marine environment at 19 beaches in the four provinces.
