Cleaning workers in Danang are trying to collect the large amount of rubbish that has covered beaches in the central city.

Workers collect rubbish on My An Beach in Danang City on August 1.

The Danang Urban Environment Company said on Wednesday that they have had to mobilise a large team to collect rubbish on the beaches that run for five kilometres along the two streets of Vo Nguyen Giap and Truong Sa.

According to residents in Phuoc My Ward, Son Tra District, the litter from the sea started drifting onto My Khe Beach four days ago. This, together with the waste and sewage running from the city's rain water drainage system have caused serious pollution on the beach.

"Many tourists have left right after seeing the beach," a local people said.

Nguyen Quynh Oanh, a visitor from Hai Phong said that she and her family came to My Khe Beach on August 2 but was shocked by the large amount of rubbish and the foul smell.

"I've heard about the beautiful and clean My Khe Beach but then I was really disappointed with the scene," Oanh said. "We had to leave immediately".

According to deputy director of the Danang Urban Environment Company, Tran Van Tien, the rubbish mostly came from local rivers and a small amount from the city's drainage system following heavy rains over the past few days.

Waste water from the rainwater drainage system run to beaches in Danang City.

"The amount of rubbish is estimated at 30 tonnes," Tien said. "We have so far collected about 15 tonnes which were mostly water-fern and tree branches from My An Beach in Ngu Hanh Son District to Tho An Beach in Son Tra District. We have sent 50 workers to clean the beaches and hope to finish the work by the afternoon of August 3."
