Strong storm likely to affect central provinces
A tropical depression has strengthened into a new storm in the East Sea after crossing the central region of the Philippines, on the afternoon of September 12, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF).
The meteorological agency predicts that as of 7am Friday morning, Storm Doksuri, the tenth to enter East Sea this year, will be located at approximately 17.7 degrees north latitude and 109 degrees east latitude, around 320km southeast of the coast of Nghe An-Ha Tinh provinces. The strongest wind in the area near the centre of typhoon is blowing at 135-150 kph.
At 7am this morning, the storm centre was located at approximately 14.8 north latitude and 117.2 degrees east latitude, around 580 km east of Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands. The strongest wind in its eye had gusts of 75-90 kph.
It is forecast that, in the next 24 hours, Doksuri will move in a northwestern direction, with an average speed of 15-20kph. By 7 am September 14, the storm center will be located at approximately 16.3 degrees north latitude and 113.2 degrees east latitude, around 120 km east of the Paracel Islands, packing 100-115kph winds in its eye.
Due to the effects of the storm, the north and central areas of the East Sea (including the Paracels) are witnessing rough seas and heavy rains.
In the next 48-72 hours, Doksuri will move quickly in a northwestern direction at about 25kph.
To actively respond to the storm and post-storm floods, especially in the mountainous northern provinces that have suffered heavy rains recently, the Central Steering Committees for Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue issued the joint Telegraph No. 62, requesting that coastal provinces and cities from Quang Ninh to Binh Dinh regularly update information and promptly inform ships operating on the sea of the location and development of the storm so that they can move out of dangerous areas, while closely monitoring vessels heading out to sea to promptly handle any bad situations and prepare forces and means for rescue work upon request.
The northern and northern central provinces were urged to immediately overcome the consequences caused by recent rain and floods, while closely following the development of Doksuri in order to take proactive measures and regularly inspect and deploy flood and landslide response plans.
Members of the Central Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Control, based on their assigned tasks, should take initiatives in reviewing plans to ensure the safety of people, infrastructure and production, in addition to protecting the environment and health of locals in areas affected by storms and floods.
Vietnam Television, Radio the Voice of Vietnam, coastal stations and relevant press agencies should regularly provide updates on the storm and flood situation and increase broadcasting time to inform people to actively take precautions.
