The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment asked the authorities of Tien Giang Province on November 1 to stop the construction of Fruit Park Project that will encroach upon a huge area of the Tien River.

The construction unit is ready to fill part of Tien River

The Fruit Park Project is invested by the authorities of Cai Be District. It covers 9.78 hectares of which 6.8 hectares would encroach upon the river. There will be gardens of various famous fruits in the area such as Hoa Loc mango and Co Co pomelo, a park, a shopping centre and parking lots.

The construction unit has installed concrete columns. They are building the embankment and are ready to fill in part of the Tien River. The encroachment will affect the river's flow and may lead to erosion in the surrounding area and downstream.

Tien Giang provincial authorities had directed Cai Be District authorities to build an environmental impact report includes the effect on the river's water and sediment flows on October 31 last year. However, this report still needs approval from higher agencies as Tien River runs through several provinces.

Tran Thanh Duc, vice chairman of Tien Giang People's Committee, said the surrounding areas would not be affected much by the change of water flow and the erosion would cease after two years.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has demanded a halt to the project and would review the environmental impact report as well as how the related parties have complied with the land, environment and water resources laws.
