Dozens of households in the central city of Danang have been affected by the erosion of a local beach.

The city authorities approved a 365-metre sea dyke project in Lien Chieu District with a total investment of VND25 billion (nearly USD1.2 million) in an effort to prevent coastal erosion due to rising sea level and climate change.

The project which was started last year has been halted many times due to the bad weather condition, so just 80% has just been completed.

As a result, many households at Hoa Hiep Bac Ward are facing the danger as they can be swept away by wave at any time. During the recent Storm Damrey, many local households had to be evacuated.

"Last month, local households used stone to build a temporary dyke to cope up with natural disasters. But, it did not improve the situation much as whenever heavy rain damages it.

Erosion has also seriously damaged Cua Dai beach in Quang Nam Province over past decade, and experts have long worried that the worst erosion would expand to Da Nang.

Danang city, which has a pristine 90km coastline, hosts 11 public beaches. However, seven out of 15 wastewater pipes still discharge untreated household sewage into the sea.
