Dozens of hectares of protected forest in Dak Lak Province have been destroyed due to lax management.

Ea Kar Company failed to monitor their allocated forest land

The Ea Kar Forestry Company was contracted to gather fallen trees and driftwood after storms and floods by Dak Lak Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. One man alone gathered over 90 cubic metres of wood in Cu Bong Commune from July 17 to 24.

However, it is discovered that living trees had also been cut down during and after the project was being carried out. Many trees in a 6-hectare forest were destroyed to make a path into other parts of the forests.

The Forest Protection Department in Dak Lak said the forest destruction was caused by Ea Kar Company's lax management. The company failed to follow the procedures to assign specific employees to monitor the process.

According to Ea Kar Company, they also contracted Vi Van Sinh in Cu Yang Commune to gather the fallen trees and driftwood in 23.69-hectare protected forest in Cu Yang Commune and 5.91-hectare forest in Cu Bong Commune. The company collected 291.9 cubic metres of wood and ended the project on July 30. Afterwards, several loggers came and damaged the forest. Ea Kar Company said they were investigating the case.

This is not Ea Kar Company's only wrongdoing. It was assigned to manage and exploit 3.27-hectare of forest in area 1 on August 21. But the Ea Kar District forest ranger unit discovered that many trees in another area had been cut down. According to the forest ranger unit, the exploitable forest areas will be cleared for Krong Pak Thuong Reservoir Project but the Ea Kar Company was found to have been working at the wrong location.

On August 22, the police in Ea Kar District discovered and seized two trucks carrying over 52 cubic metres of wood. The expanded investigation also shows a large number of trees have been illegally chopped down in those areas.

The Dak Lak Forest Protection Department has asked the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to report the case to Dak Lak People's Committee and transfer the case to the police. The police in Ea Kar District have been instructed to investigate and report the results back by September 20.
