Hundreds of wild birds have been sold at a temporary market by Thang Long Avenue in Hanoi.

The bird market is often quite crowded every afternoon.

Many rare species are placed on the top of the cages so that customers can easily recognise them. A grey heron weighing 1.8-2 kilos is usually priced at VND750,000 -1 million (USD34.090-USD45.454).

A lesser whistling duck is sold at VND550,000-600,000.

When asked about the origins of the birds, traders just said that they are brought from different areas, refusing to give more details.

The birds can be slaughtered at the market if customers want.

A black-crowned night heron is priced at VND80,000-110,000, depending different time.

The bird market has been operated for three years with more than 10 frequent traders.

Endangered species continue to be sold at the market.

A stork baked with straw is sold at VND60,000-80,000.
