Some 30 kilometres of beach in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue has suffered from serious erosion.

According to the provincial Steering Board of Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, Search and Rescue, the erosion has been found at 12 points stretching from Phong Dien to Phu Loc districts. The situation has worsened following recent torrential rains and high flood tides.

The beach erosion in Phu Loc District

The beach erosion has been seen in Vinh Hai Commune, Phu Loc District over the past 20 years, which has been mainly attributed to saltwater intrusion. However, no measures were carried out to deal with the problem.

After recent heavy rains, Vinh Hai beach has continued being damaged. Some sections have been even eroded at the depth of up to 10 metres.

Beaches in Loc Binh and Loc Vinh communes are the same with erosions of hundreds of metres long and more than 10 metres deep.

Dang Tien Tuy, chairman of Phu Thuan Commune People’s Committee, local authorities expect the second phase of the beach dyke project to be carried out early. The locality has also arranged 3.5 hectares of land for 160 households in the list of urgent relocation because of the beach erosion.

The commune will continue identifying vulnerable households.
