National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan said that green growth and sustainable development had become the top concern for many nations, including Vietnam. She hoped that the new trees would help prevent land erosion, floods and mitigate pollution.

"I call for all organisations and individuals to participate in the festival and to realise that this is our common responsibility and to all our benefit," she said. "Protecting the environment means protecting our development and improving life quality."

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha also said that the festival held practical meaning as climate change had badly impacted Vietnam. Extreme weather events are becoming more common and unpredictable while the protected forest is dwindling.

"We are facing record high temperatures, unusually heavy rains and storms that have worsened erosion and flooding problems," he said.

He went on to say that the ministry has worked with many departments in the past years to hold the tree planting festival in the new year as well as co-operating with many agencies and organisations to launch more tree planting events in the year.

"Planting the trees today for future generations will play an important role in dealing with climate change, helping the eco-system and ensuring that human can live in harmony with nature," he said.

Ngan and state leaders helped plant over 2,200 trees during the festival. Hoa Binh authorities and local people will grow trees on 5,790 hectares of land.

On February 10, Party General Secretary, President Nguyen Phu Trong had launched the New Year Tree Planting Festival in Yen Bai Province.
