Thousands face water shortages in Quang Ngai

According to the provincial authorities, the hot spell has come sooner and may last longer than normal. As a result, the water levels in local rivers are 20-50% lower than in previous years, affecting 8,000 people, 8,000 cattle and 6,000 hectares of crops.

Quang Ngai People's Committee asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Finance to report to the prime minister to grant the province VND90bn in support to deal with drought and saltwater intrusion.

The money will be allocated to 16 agencies to pay for electricity bills, canal dredging and pumping water tasks.

The provincial authorities are implementing various measures to deal with the drought. In locations that have always face water shortage like Ly Son Island and coastal communes like Mo Duc District, the authorities will try to extend the water pipes and mobile water supply vehicles to provide fresh water for daily use.

For cultivated lands, farmers are advised to switch to crops that do not require as much water.
