VND10trn anti-flooding project set for 2020 completion

Chairman of HCM City People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong asked related agencies to report about the project's progress during the meeting about socio-economic development in the first half of 2019 on July 19.

Nguyen Hoang Anh Dung, deputy head of the management board of urban infrastructure construction investment in HCM City, said they had completed 75% of the workload. However, 10 households in Binh Chanh and Nha Be districts still haven't been cleared.

"The investors promised that if the ground clearance is completed early then they will be able to complete the constructions in June next year," Dung said.

Nha Be District authorities said there was only a compensation plan for people living near Cay Kho sewer so they were confused at how to deal with other areas. The district authorities said they would finish the compensation task within 45 days after the plan is approved. They would also speed up the resettlement process to ensure that the project will meet the schedule.

People live on floating houses on the canals will not be given high compensation so they hope to get financially supported. They are willing to move but were waiting for a new offer.

In March, Secretary of the HCM City Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan conducted a field trip to inspect the progress of the project and urged to put the first phase into operation in late 2019. He said this project played an important role in preventing flooding in a 570sq.m central area and along the Saigon River, an area with 6.5 million people.

Climate change has also been considered.
