The central province of Nghe An has planned to spend VND18.7 billion (USD826,086) on preserving elephants which are at risk of extinction.

On Monday, the province held a seminar on the plan for the 2020 -2025 period.

Elephants in Nghe An Province

Vietnam’s elephant numbers are the lowest among 13 Asian countries and the animal is on the verge of extinction.

According to the Vietnam Administration of Forestry, last year, Vietnam was home to between 100 and 130 elephants which are listed in the country’s Red Book for preservation priority.

The government issued a project on elephant preservation by 2020, including those in Pu Mat National Park in Nghe An Province.

At present, there are roughly 13-14 elephants left in Nghe An which are divided into four small groups in Pu Mat National Park and near Pu Huong Nature Reserve.

In 2013, Nghe An approved an urgent elephant preservation project by 2020, including 29 kilometres of forest patrol road and 4.43 kilometres of stone fence to prevent elephants from crop destruction in Anh Son District.

Since then, no elephant poaching has been detected. Elephants in Pu Mat District also gave birth to two baby elephants.

At the seminar, delegates provided information on local elephants and also proposed compensation for households which have been affected by elephants.

Dinh Viet Hong, vice chairman of the provincial people’s committee, urged Pu Mat National Park to rapidly complete the plan for the committee to approve.
