Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has sent an official document directing local authorities to deal with the severe drought in the central region on July 24.

Farmers trying to save crops

Since the start of the summer crops, the weather has been harsh as widespread heatwave ravaged the central region and central highlands. The average temperatures from June 9 to 12 and from June 20 to 23 were 37-40 degrees. Nghe An and Ha Tinh reported record temperatures during those heat waves.

On the other hand, the rainfall this year is much lower than in previous years. The water levels in many lakes and reservoirs were only 20-60% of total capacity. According to the Vietnam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration, the heatwave will continue to occur and the central region has to face widespread drought.

The city people's committees were asked to apply measures to deal with the drought such as digging wells, dredging the canals, and asking the residents to collect and save water. They must set up a fund for emergencies and pay attention to the people living in the mountainous and coastal areas.

The city authorities must ask farmers to switch to dry land farming, collaborate with firms for detailed production plans and prepare for the winter-spring crops. The authorities must prioritise projects that upgrade or repair irrigation constructions.

The Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development were asked to build plans to deal with drought and salinisation. They must monitor the hydropower reservoirs closely to make timely adjustments and work with local authorities to help farmers switch to dry land farming.

Hydropower plants in areas that often have drought and saltwater intrusion will be reviewed along with projects that provide fresh water to rural areas.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will monitor the weather and work with the Ministry of Agriculture on reservoir adjustments. The Ministry of Industry and Trade will work with the Vietnam Electricity Group to ensure the power for the pumping stations and called for the residents to save power.
