According to the Directorate of Water Resources under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, heavy rains over the recent days have sharply increased the water level in reservoirs in the northern and northern central region.

The north is now home to nearly 3,000 reservoirs, including 2,700 small ones. Among those, seven big reservoirs and over 740 small reservoirs have been almost full, including 520 in Hoa Binh, 77 in Lao Cai, 70 in Bac Giang and 50 in Ha Giang.

Meanwhile, the northern central region has some 1,030 reservoirs. Of this, 420 in Thanh Hoa, 510 in Nghe An and 142 in Ha Tinh have been a dangerous level.

Nguyen Van Tinh, head of the directorate, worried that the high water level would threaten a large area of crops in the regions, particularly rains have been forecasted to continue this month.

He urged localities to take urgent measures to water drainage at reservoirs and canals to prevent and control possible losses.
