Construction on second waste-to-energy plant starts in HCM City
Authorities in Ho Chi Minh City this morning, October 16, started construction of the second waste-to-energy plant in Cu Chi District.
This is the second waste-to-energy plant to be built after the first plant, the Vietstar, was started on August 28.
Speaking at the event, director of Tam Sinh Nghia Company, Ngo Xuan Tiec, who is the plant's investor said that the technology was entirely automated, did not emit odors or require trash to be sorted at source, which was suitable for Vietnam.
"After completing the first phase of the plant, we are planning to propose the second phase with daily capacity increased to 5,000 tonnes of waste," Tiec said.
Addressing the event, chairman of HCM City People's Committee, Nguyen Thanh Phong said that the city was dealing with over 9,000 tonnes of household waste every day, so really needed modern waste treatment technologies, including waste-to-energy technology.
The Tam Sinh Nghia Plant is planned to have daily capacity of 2,000 tonnes of waste.
The Tam Sinh Nghia Plant, which will be built with an investment of VND5 trillion (USD217m) at Tay Bac Landfill, is planned to have daily capacity of 2,000 tonnes of waste. The 40-megawatt plant is scheduled to begin operation in August 2021.

"The city will build more waste-to-energy plants in the coming time, expecting to raise the daily capacity to over 9,000 tonnes which is half of the city's total household waste amount by 2020," he said.
According to the city's plan, an estimated 98 MW of electricity could be produced in 2020 and 2021, increasing to 198 MW by 2030.
