Four Paws Organisation has rescued an Asiatic black bear which has been kept by a family in the northern mountainous province of Son La for nearly 30 years.

The male bear was raised there since when it was just 0.4 kilos. The animal now weighs dozens of kilos.

The bear was put in a small cage outside near the family’s pig farm. It was fed just once a day and did not give enough water to drink.

Following encouragement from local authorities and the Four Paws Organisation, the house owner agreed to hand over the bear.

On Wednesday, experts from the organisation saved the bear and named it as Ben. They also conducted a medical check-up on the animal.

According to Veterinarian Szilvia Kalogeropoulu of Four Paws, the bear is thin and has signs of the bile extraction along with tooth decay. Its feet are rough because of the lack of exercise and space.

The bear has been sent to Ninh Binh Bear Sanctuary where it will be taken care of at a separate area at least for three weeks.

The Four Paws Organisation reported that there are around 450 bears, mainly Asiatic black bears, which are still being kept at 150 households nationwide. The agency is trying to rescue them.
