Bac Lieu to face serious saline intrusion
Bac Lieu Province will face severe drought and saline intrusion during the dry season this year, according to the provincial people's committee.
It is estimated that Bac Lieu will start facing difficulties since early March. Decreasing underground water and drought will cause a water shortage for many households.
According to Cuong, this year drought and saline intrusion may even be more severe than 2015-2016 crop. However, with early warnings, the agriculture sector has prepared plans and measures to deal with the situation. Cuong asked localities authorities to monitor the situation and the rice fields.
The VND280bn (USD12m) Ninh Quoi canal lock project was started in November 2018 and is expected to complete in 29 months. The main parts of the project have been completed and will be finished early and put into use this dry season. It is hoped that the project will help mitigate and prevent saline intrusion in Bac Lieu and nearly areas.
It is vital that the project is finished in time to fight against saline intrusion according to Cuong. He urged the related parties to quickly finish the project and transfer it to Bac Lieu authorities.
