Hundreds of hectares of land in the central province of Nghe An have been left unused because of drought.

Initially, people in Quang Thanh Commune in Yen Thanh District planned to grow a total of 273 hectares of rice for this year’s Summer-Autumn crop. However, due to drought which has lasted for nearly a month, up to 80 hectares of the total area have been used to grow other kinds of crops.

Phan Duc Tien, chairman of Quang Thanh Commune, said that since May 3, Quang Thanh District has not yet seen any rain.

Last year, the locality also witnessed a limited rainfall so local reservoirs failed to accumulate much water. At present, more than 30 small reservoirs in the locality have become dry; while the water level in larger reservoirs remains very modest and not enough for irrigation.

Tay Thanh Commune in Yen Thanh District is in the same situation with roughly 135 hectares being left idle due to the shortage of water.

"We have never seen such a long drought before. We’re longing for rain for our farming activities,” said Pham Cong Trieu, chairman of Tay Thanh Commune.

Phan Trong Hue, a local resident in Tay Thanh Commune, said that his family mainly depended on farming, but now, their land is abandoned owing to drought.

According to Nguyen Van Duong, head of Yen Thanh District’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, around 600 hectares of rice are in dire need of water.

The drought has also been ravaging Dien Loi, Dien Doai, Dien Lam and Dien Hoang districts in Nghe An.

Le The Hieu, head of Dien Chau District’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that some 700 hectares of land in the locality is short of water.

Nghe An Province has been forecasted to experience the highest temperature of 38-40 degrees Celsius in the coming days.

The provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has been asked to co-operate with localities on water regulation and instruct farmers to use water economically. Many localities have also been allowed to turn into growing crops which can adapt to drought.
