Two bears rescued from illegal animal trade
Ninh Binh Bear Sanctuary announced on July 28 that they have received two Asian black bears from the illegal animal trade in Lai Chau Province.
The bears weighed 8-10kg. Dr Lam Kim Hai said their health was stable and they would be put into special care unit at Ninh Binh Bear Sanctuary. In the first three weeks, the experienced crew would provide them with nutrition and suitable exercises and help them mingle in with other bears.
Ngo Thi Thanh Huong, director of Four Paws Vietnam said the arrest showed the determination of Lai Chau police in preventing illegal wild animal trade in Vietnam. She hoped the local authorities would continue the investigation to find more violations and make the case a deterrent to other people.
People that catch, raise and trade bears illegally can face up to 15 years of imprisonment. In 2005, 4,300 bears have been found at various bear farms in Vietnam. This number dropped to 400 in early 2020 after much rescue efforts. Those bears are often malnourished and neglected.
