Deputy Minister urged to repair damaged canal section in Thanh Hoa
Thousands hectares of cultivated land has been damaged after a canal section in Thanh Hoa Province broke.
The canal is a part of the Cua Dat Reservoir Project which was approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in 2011. The canal construction was started in September 2014 and completed in December 2016. It provides water for over 28,000 ha of crops and household water for many areas in Thanh Hoa.
A delegation led by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Hoang Hiep arrived at the scene on December 29. Initial investigation shows that since the canal is located on difficult terrain and the canal's structure was damaged.
Hiep asked related agencies to work overnight and quickly repair the canal within three days to save the crops in the area. They must also work with local authorities to assess the damage and compensate the farmers. In the long-term, managers and operators of the canals must reassess the construction to detect possible threats and avoid similar incidents.
